One of Ksar Tafilelt’s core principles is community involvement. Every new resident must sign a charter for communal living, committing to rules of civility, cleanliness, and participation in collective tasks.
The residents insist they have not invented anything new—they have simply preserved the wisdom of their ancestors: respect nature and give it its due.
A Forward-Thinking Architecture Inspired by the Past
Considered visionary, Ksar Tafilelt’s architecture is built upon time-tested techniques. Its narrow alleyways are designed to break the force of the wind and minimize sandstorms. The buildings, constructed using local materials such as stone, plaster, and lime, offer excellent thermal and sound insulation. To preserve harmony and natural lighting, no building exceeds 7.6 meters in height. Windows are fitted with traditional “moucharabiehs”, ensuring ventilation while maintaining privacy.
Each home is specifically designed for the harsh desert climate: no windows open to the outside, except for a single ceiling opening for ventilation, complemented by two interior openings—one upstairs and another on the terrace, called a “Chebak”.
With their earth-toned facades, these homes blend seamlessly into their surroundings and are surrounded by lush gardens, creating a microclimate in this arid region.
A Genuine Commitment to Ecology
Environmental protection is at the heart of this project. Half of the wastewater is treated using biological purification, and waste sorting is actively practiced. Additionally, part of the public lighting is powered by solar energy
The community has also created an eco-park, where every resident commits to planting three trees: a palm tree, an ornamental tree, and a fruit tree, all maintained using organic farming principles. This park is also home to a mini-zoo, where various animal species are fed with organic waste, alongside a diverse range of plant life.
Raising Environmental Awareness Among Youth
One of Ksar Tafilelt’s key missions is to educate younger generations about ecology. Throughout the year, educational activities and guided tours are organized to teach children about resource management and environmental preservation.
